On June 25, 2014, the burlesque world lost a true legend. Ms. Frieda LaBreche, known to the Burlesque world as Wild Cherry, passed away, leaving behind a huge legacy as the inspiration for so many performers who came after her. She left her mark on an industry that has grown and flourished in recent years, and she will be dearly missed.
I never had the privilege to meet her in person, though I did get to interact with her indirectly. My friend and legend in her own right, Coco Lectric, was personally mentored by Wild Cherry. To pay tribute to her, Coco asked me to help her recreate Wild Cherry's signature pose and look. Coco spent a lot of time working out the details, researching the minutia, and making sure that we got as close to the original as possible. The outfit and accessories were meticulously made to match the originals by Indigo Blue of Seattle, WA, and Sherry Bomb of Austin, TX. Hair and makeup were done by Coco herself, and we shot the image in my studio in late March of 2013.
Coco topped her tribute with a performance that was coached and overseen by Wild Cherry herself. You can catch that performance below. Wild Cherry was an enigmatic and amazing woman. She was a pioneer in the industry and a legend in her own time. She will be missed.
